Patients with early stage Hodgkin lymphoma who are treated with a combination of chemotherapy followed by radiotherapy have very good chances of recovery today. The aim of the GHSG’s recent trials was therefore to reduce the side effects of treatment while maintaining healing rates. The results of the GHSG’s HD10 trial for early stage Hodgkin patients have now been published in the worldwide leading medical journal, the New England Journal of Medicine. The international multicenter HD10 trial included 1370 patients from 329 centers in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic and the Netherlands. The trial demonstrated that a short chemotherapy consisting of 2 cycles of ABVD followed by radiation of the involved lymph node regions is the ideal therapeutic combination. With this combination the intensity of radiotherapy can even be reduced by 30% without causing an impairment of healing results. The side effects of this short-time treatment are considerably lower. It can also be expected that this will lead to a clear reduction of treatment-induced late toxicities. [download paper]
